続報：「チャーチルの言葉」

チャーチルの言葉としてよく引用されている警句：

20歳までに左翼に傾倒しない者は情熱が足りない。
20歳を過ぎて左翼に傾倒している者は知能が足りない。

がチャーチルによるものではないという話の続報である。


10月31日付の「どこかの掲示板で「チャーチルの言葉」に関しての言及があったようなので、少々既述を見直す」を書いた後、気になってまた少し調べてみた。今度は英語で前回よりはちょっとだけまじめに。


まず、仮託問題については、wikiquoteの「Winston Churchill」で、しっかり「Misattributions」（誤った仮託）として冒頭に挙げられている（若干見た目を変更）：

  • If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain.
    • According to the Falsely Attributed Quotations page at the Churchill Centre, "there is no record of anyone hearing Churchill say this." Paul Addison of Edinburgh University is quoted as stating: "Surely Churchill can't have used the words attributed to him. He'd been a Conservative at 15 and a Liberal at 35! And would he have talked so disrespectfully of Clemmie, who is generally thought to have been a lifelong Liberal?"
    • Also variously attributed to George Bernard Shaw and Benjamin Disraeli and Otto von Bismark.
    • Variants:
      • Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has not heart; and any man who is over 30, and is not a conservative, has no brains.
      • Show me a young conservative and I'll show you someone with no heart. Show me an old liberal and I'll show you someone with no brains.
      • If you are not a socialist by the time you are 25, you have no heart. If you are still a socialist by the time you are 35, you have no head

ということで、おそらく同じソースに基づき、誤った仮託である事が述べられている（赤太字）。
また、以前に

ギゾー（1787〜1874）


その他、バーナード・ショー、クレマンソー等々のバージョンもあり

という2chの書き込みを紹介していたが、ここでもバーナード・ショーやディスラエリ（ビクトリア朝の名宰相だとか）、ビスマルクに仮託されている例があることが紹介されている（太字）。



で、問題は、はじめに言ったのは誰か、ということだ。


明確なソースはいまだ見つけられていないが、このような掲示板の記述があった。

And, thinking about the quote, it seems to be a complete pile of rubbish the more I consider it.

すなわち、歴史の教授のヒトに聞いたら、チャーチルがそんなことを言ったはずがないと、たくさん根拠を挙げて教えてくれて、多分フランシス・ベーコンが最初にそれを言ったのだと。


えーと。フランシス・ベーコンも警句の「大家」じゃなかったっけ？更なる泥沼を目の前に広げられた気分だ。とほほ。
