喫煙の代償

4月20日のTimes紙の3面にこんな記事が出てた。

The human cost of smoking

印象深いのはこの一節。

At any age up to 80, the chances of dying in the next year are virtually doubled by being a smoker

80歳までのいかなる年代においても、翌年に死亡する確率は、喫煙によってほぼ2倍になる(意訳)

2倍ってすごくね?



まあよく読むと、

it was impossible to say if smoking was a “marker” for social class, or risk-taking behaviour, because actuaries did not gather data on those factors.

とあるので、交絡因子の影響を排除できていないようなんだけどね。


ちなみにウェブには出ていないんだけど、紙面上では昔の新聞広告にこんなのがあったよ、と紹介してる写真があった。その広告の文句とキャプションは下記のとおり。
